How to Cut Down Hair System to Fit Your Customer’s Head Size
Welcome to Royal Hair Vietnam! Today, Ryan will walk you through a step-by-step tutorial on how to cut down a hair system (toupee) from a ready-made stock piece into a custom size that fits your client’s head perfectly.
This tutorial is especially helpful for hair salons, wig retailers, or anyone working with stock toupees who wants to create a better, more personalized fit for their customers.
Step 1: Create a Custom Template
Before you begin cutting the hair system, you’ll need to make a custom template that matches the bald area and head shape of your client. This is the most important step to ensure the final piece fits snugly and naturally.
We’ve created a detailed video and written guide on how to make a hairpiece template. You can check it out here:

Step 2: Trace the Template on the Hair System
Once you have the template ready:
Place the template on top of the stock toupee (hair system).
Use a makeup pencil or any washable marker to trace the outline of the template directly onto the base of the toupee.
Make sure the traced shape is exactly aligned with the desired size and position.
Step 3: Cut the Hair System Using a Razor Blade
Now it’s time to cut down the hair system:
Use a new, sharp razor blade (avoid dull blades).
Start cutting lightly along the marked outline. Apply gentle pressure—enough to slice through the base, but not deep enough to cut the hair knots underneath.
Cut from front to back, maintaining the frontal shape and reducing from the back side as needed.
After cutting, use your fingers to remove any excess hair strands around the edges.
Just like that, you’ve successfully transformed a full-size stock toupee into a custom-fitted hair system!
Important Notes When Cutting Down Hair Systems
✅ You can only cut hair systems made from these materials:
PU (Polyurethane)
French Lace or Swiss Lace
Welded Mono
✅ Always cut from front to back to preserve the natural hairline.
✅ Do not cut too deep; only slice the base material to avoid damaging the hair knots.
✅ Make sure to use a clean, unused razor blade for each new cut.
